OVO Hydro Arena – Engineering work of art

Project cost £125m, The OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow, formerly SSE Hydro, is a renowned entertainment venue with a 12,000-seat capacity. Hosting 140 events annually, it draws a million visitors yearly, ranking as the fifth busiest arena globally.

Its distinctive design features an elliptical, angled roof made of 12,750sqm of curved Kalzip sheets. The façade, rising from 15m to 33m in height, uses pneumatic ETFE cushions, allowing daylight to brighten the interiors by day and creating a glowing effect at night. The arena showcases intricate engineering, including 5,200 tonnes of steel, 342sqm of curtain wall, and various aluminium components.
